Beacon Of Truth

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden" Matthew 5:14

The only title that Jesus shares with His Church is 'the light of the world'. In John 8:12, He said " I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." The noteworthy statement of Jesus is in John 9:5:"While I am in the world, I am the light of the world"

From all these verses, we can come to the conclusion that Jesus is the true light that shines in the darkness and after His ascension, He wants to shine through His Church. Through everyone who is a member of His body, the Lord wants to drive out the darkness of this world. Thus the Lord wants each of us to be a beacon of truth in this world.

Let's try to meditate this one verse, where the Lord called His disciples the light of the world, Matthew 5:14.

Here the Lord speaks about a lighted city on a hill. To understand the implication of this illustration, we need to know how cities were built in ancient days. In the days of Jesus, cities were preferably built on a hill. The motive was to place the city in such a way that it was easy for travelers to locate. In those days, people used to travel for days or even months. They might even travel in the night. The only way to locate the destination is to look for a bright spot among the hills. Thus the travelers in the dark are drawn by lighted city on the hill.

Jesus used this to illustrate the ministry of His Church as the light of this world. So the Lord's will for His Church is to be a powerful beacon drawing sinners in the dark to Christ. The true Church is like a powerful magnet that draws people to Christ. Such a Church, Jesus said cannot be hidden. I suppose the reason for the lack of a powerful testimony of the Christian Church in this world is because it has no light of God in it.

Imagine a city on a hill, that is equally dark as its surroundings. Will any traveler be drawn to the city? If the Church is as dark as the world, then no one will be drawn by the Church to Christ.

What is this light?

The answer can be found by looking at Jesus-the true light of the world. About Jesus it is written in John 1:4 "In him was life, and that life was the light of men". The life that filled Jesus made Him the light of this world. His pure inner life made Him the light of men. So we have the answer, the light is life indeed.

The amount in which we partake this life of God(eternal life), we will be the light of this world. For partaking this life, Christians should put to death the adamic life by taking up the cross daily. Listen to what Paul, the apostle says in 2 Corinthians 4:10-11
"We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body"

Unless we carry the death of Jesus in our body, the life of Jesus will not be revealed in us. Hence the most important requirement for this ministry of being the light of this world is to walk the way of the cross daily. No wonder, we do not hear much exhortations on the way of the cross. The devil knows that if the Church starts walking the way of the cross, it is the end of the dominion of darkness.

Though through out this article I have used the word Church, it equally applies to our individual lives. When Christians take up the cross individually, the Church will truly be the light of this world, the beacon of truth, that city lighted on the hill.
